Fundamentals of Ophthalmic Microsurgery Course

Led by Prof. Dr. med. Gabriele Thumann and Prof. Dr. James Schutz, the Fundamentals of Ophthalmic Microsurgery Course offers, during a 2-day event, a deep-dive in ophtalmic microsurgery, through theoretical seminars and practical workshops.

Course program

This course objective is to provide ophthalmic surgeons with knowledge of the anatomic and physicologic bases of cataract surgery, pre-op preparation and positioning of patients for intraocular surgery. Participants are able to practice the aseptic technique in ophthalmic microsurgery, and to also handle 10-0 nylon suture. The 2nd day gives them the opportunity to learn about the strategy and tactics of phacoemulsification surgery, phaco complications and anterior vitrectomy. Each practical exercise is guided by experienced surgeons, each participant can enrich their knowledge and skills on a fully equipped dedicated station.

  • Anatomic and physiologic bases of catarct surgery
  • Aseptic technique in ophthalmic microsurgery 10-0 nylon suture handling
  • Suturing conjunctiva and cornea
  • Viscoelastics in the different steps of cataract surgery
  • Phaco complications and anterior vitrectomy
  • Phaco and I/A console settings and their effects
  • Repair of lid skin lacerations
