2024 First Masterclass in surgery after FGM/C

2024 First Masterclass in surgery after FGM/C

The 1st Masterclass in surgery after Femal Genital Mutilation/cutting took place at the SFITS in Geneva on February 16-17, 2024. Led by Dr. Jasmine Abdulcadir, a OBGYN surgeon at the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève (HUG), this masterclass aimed at providing an in-depth anatomical understanding of the vulva after FGM/C.

The event (2024)

Experts came to discuss and share their knowledge and techniques, in order to improve the care of women and girls with FGM/C, to promote networking and to build groundsfor future collaboration and research projects. Reconstruction after FGM/C is a relatively young and underinvestigated field and it is only one aspect of the patient care.

For example: at Les Orchidées Rouges, a French NGO, founded by Kakpotia Marie-Claire Koulibaly, where only 5% of their patients opt for surgery. Their missions are to help women in their emancipation in giving them the support and alternatives, to make the best decision for themselves.

The program

This 2-day event provided the platform to debate surgical techniques developed by Dr. Pierre Foldes and Dr. Dan Mon O’Dey, to highlight research projects and progress, and to hear experiences shared by survivors and associations. On Friday afternoon, Dr. Dan Mon O’Dey presented his innovative clitoral reconstruction technique during a live dissection which is currently used in Germany and Tanzania.

Hundred people from around the world participated either online or in person to this one-of-a-kind event.

Clitoris, le sixième continent (Heidi.news – 2025)

This first Masterclass also contributed to the writing of the Heidi.news review on “Clitoris, le sixième continent – Une exploration scientifique en territoire inconnu”, written by Natacha Gorwitz.

While knowledge on male sexual organs is extensive, Natacha Gorwitz explores the significance of the clitoris, from a scientific perspective, through a series of episodes. Her main goal is to examine what one already knows and what still remains to be discovered.

In collaboration with the photographer Andi Gáldi Vinkó, specialists and experts in their field, such as Dr Jasmine Abdulcadir, the review aims at illustrating and providing more in-depth on this enigmatic female body part.
