2022 Swiss National Science Foundation Award

The SFITS participated to the SNSF Scientific Image Competition casts. The SNSF Science Image Competition invites researchers working in Switzerland to make their work visible to the public and the media. For the second time in a row, we are proud to announce that one of our pictures was selected by the jury. It will be exhibited at the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography in May 2022.

More about the cast

It rewards photographs, images and videos for their aesthetic quality, their ability to inspire and amaze. The work has to transmit/illustrate a knowledge, to describe a human story or to discover a new universe. An international jury awards a first prize and several mentions in each of the four categories of the competition:

  • Object of study
  • Locations and instruments
  • Women and men of science
  • Video loops

The SFITS received the jury distinction in the “Women and men of science” category with a picture named “From head to toe“.

The winning picture

Description : Photograph taken at the Swiss Foundation for Innovation and Training in Surgery (SFITS). In this image, the anatomical specialist is carefully assessing the real time injection of a blood analogue under fluoroscopy using a vascular imaging system. Knowledge and assessment of the intricate vascular system is vital in the development of post-mortem techniques aimed at creating realistic conditions for surgical trainings on anatomical specimens.

Photographer: Julien Busset

Model: Samuel Airoldi

Comment by the jury :

“This very well executed shot with beautiful lightning takes the viewer into the moment: the intensity of the scientist’s gaze as he looks at the screen signals that something is going on – he is seeing, analysing, understanding.”
